Iron Horse is the most badass bluegrass band that has ever been created.  They have a few original albums but are more well known for their incredible tribute albums.  They've released tributes to Led Zeppelin, Ozzy/Sabbath, Van Halen, Metallica (they made two of those), and even the Shins and Modest Mouse (they also have a Goo Goo Dolls tribute but I have never heard it nor will I ever hear it).

Music Monday: Secret Mommy "Hawaii 5-0"

Music_Monday_Secret_Mommy_Hawa.zip (49 KB)

I'm in Hawaii, so this seems obvious.

From Ache Records:

Who better to document the tropics then the absurd? Who better to spin tales of white beaches and exotic birds then he with little patience? He who will dislocate steel drums, slice pineapples, bend beach balls, and indiscriminately crush vacation time into sand. Secret Mommy has championed the art of never knowing when to stop. He has pushed the traditional summer soundtrack past its breaking point only to discover that once the slack key guitars are demolished he is able to reassemble them into something new. These five songs are summertime anthems. Not five in a list of a thousand, but the list itself sliced & stitched, cut & pasted, pushed & pulled into forms which are uncharacteristically personal.

This is Andy Dixon's third release under the Secret Mommy moniker, the first two being full lengths on San Francisco's ORTHLORNG MUSORK. But on this, his newest EP, Mr. Mommy has culled the playful wit of his previous efforts and designed five narratives on separate aspects of Hawaii.

The Party of Helicopters "The Toucher"

I realize that some of these bands are pretty obscure.  A few of them are now defunct and only had a few releases of limited quantity on basement-run indie labels.  The only reason I'm aware of them is from my days as a booking agent in college.  If you hear something you like, but can find anything on the internet or local shop, let me know and I will upload some stuff for you.

Music Monday: Drown Culture

Music_Monday_Drown_Culture.zip (574 KB)

The main reason Drown Culture is this weeks Music Monday artist is because I noticed that their site is also blocked in China (at least on my campus).  Much like NPR, the Drown Culture site comes up with a prohibited content warning.

I guess Green Dam don't take kindly to space-synth-pop made by people wearing wigs and orange jumpsuits.  They have a new(ish) album called "Contest of Human" which is available for free on their website, but obviously I can't post songs from it because I access it.  I've uploaded a couple old songs from previous albums.  If you're interested in hearing more songs about getting drunk with aliens and robots, check out their myspace or drownculture.com.

Music Monday: Sleepy Sun "Embrace"

Sleepy Sun seems like a band created just for me.  They remind me of numerous bands that I really enjoy, yet when put side-by-side with any of those bands, they still sound completely original and new.  They've got a stoner rock style, but they're not even heavy.  The vocals are soulful and, at the same time, totally fucking weird.  People who like Cat Power, Black Mountain, Jessie Sykes, and any band on Gold Standard Labs (RIP) or Troubleman Unlimited Records will totally enjoy this album.

If I smoked weed, I would totally get my drugs on to this album.  I'm not sure if "get my drugs on" is proper drug user jargon, but it always takes me like ten minutes of listening to someone talk about drugs for me to realize that they're talking about drugs because they always use ridiculous code words and slang.  Stop being so confusing, druggies.  Some of us get disappointed when we find out you're not talking about fruit.

Music Monday: Ol' Dirty Bastard "Nigga Please"

Michael Jackson's death last week didn't really make me sad, think about how great Thriller was, or forget that he'd been completely insane for the past 15 years.  It inspired me to queue up some music from a deceased artist that I actually appreciated and miss dearly:  Russell "Ol' Dirty Bastard" Jones AKA Big Baby Jesus AKA Dirt McGirt AKA Dirt Dog AKA Ason Unique AKA The Man of All Rainbows AKA Prince Delight AKA Dirk Hardpec AKA Big Box o' Chili... (the list goes on and on).  1999's Nigga Please is one of my favorite albums of all time.  It sounds like a drunk homeless man broke into a recording studio.  It sounds perfect.  I'm pretty sure I know all the lyrics by heart from driving around with my friends in high school and yelling them out the window at people we passed by.

"Just dance if you caught up in the holy ghost trance / if you stop i'ma put them killah ants in your pants / I'm the ODB as you can see / FBI don't you be watchin' me"

Music Monday: The Gossip "Music For Men"

Music_Monday_The_Gossip_Music_.zip (83 KB)

I've been a fan of the Olympia, Washington art-punk-soul-dance band The Gossip since 2002's "Arkansas Heat" EP and after almost 10 years as a group, they're finally going to get the respect they deserve with "Music for Men".  Produced by hit-maker / best-beard-contest-winner Rick Rubin, who's golden touch has caressed everything from Jay-Z to Slayer to Johnny Cash to The Mars Volta (and even the South Park Chef Aid album), "Music for Men" is The Gossip's cleanest and most accessible release to date without straying too far from the gritty, garage-rock-soul sound that set them apart to begin with.  Definitely one of the best albums of 2009 so far.

Music Monday: Pelican "Ephemeral"

Pelican's latest EP "Ephemeral" is also its first release on Southern Lord, home of heavy music heavyweights like sunn 0))), Wolves in the Throne Room, and Boris.  It also includes a fantastic cover of Earth's "Geometry of Murder" featuring that dude from Earth.  "Ephemeral" takes Pelican back to the heavy, riffy days of "Australasia". Get on it.

Music Monday: Zombi "Spirit Animal"

I saw Zombi perform live a few years ago.  They opened for The Party of Helicopters in some lecture hall at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA.  They blew the university's puny fuses twice during the first song.  It doesn't sound like it (even live), but Zombi is just two dudes.  Their music is a cross between the kind that accompanies a planetarium light show and a John Carpenter musical score.  Put on your flight suit...  Buy It
