Final Project
Last spring, I had my students come up with a business plan. Last fall, I gave them an exam that was borderline impossible. This semester, I thought I'd give my Liaoning University Business English students something a little more relevant for their final. For their Spring 2009 final project (and, for many of them, their final project with me before they head off to the UK to finish their degrees), my students will be researching new media and social networks from a business point of view.
First, they will choose a company to represent. This company will be an existing one that sells goods or services to consumers. After a bit of research on that company, they will then research new, up-and-coming, and interesting social media outlets and figure out which they think would best suit the company they have chosen. They will then create marketing plans and creative content that utilize the specific features for the websites/social networks they have chosen. Once all that is taken care of, they'll create a presentation and research paper to turn in.
The initial list of new social media to research is as follows:
Posterous
Twitter
Flickr
Last.FM
Vimeo
De.li.cious/Digg
I'm anxious to see what they come up with, mainly with Twitter and Posterous; and especially because the information I've given them to start with is so vague: research this, research that, create at way to connect the two. I love giving open ended assignments because I never know what I'm going to get in return. The results are always incredibly creative and surprising.
If I know you and I know that you use or have used one or more of the websites on the list, I might be contacting you on the off chance that some students want to interview existing users. Watch out for that if you're one of my (real) friends. Don't be scared, they don't bite.
Also, since she'll be in China during finals week, my mom will take part in the grading of some of the student presentations. So that's weird.
